Grandparents Raising Grandchildren
Prior to my retirement in 1996, I spent nearly eight years trying to determine the effects on grandparents, parents, and grandchildren in families in which the grandparents were heads of households in home whose their minor grandchildren lived (both with parents present and without parents present). During the latter part of this research I was joined by Patricia Pakan, Ph.D.

A biographical sketch of Patricia Pakan, PHD
Dr. Pakan is a Program Associate of the Division of Basic Medical Sciences at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.
Dr. Pakan received her Ph.D. in Counselor Education in 1993 from the University of Rochester and holds a State of Ohio and a State of New York Registered Nurse license. Prior to joining the College of Medicine, Dr. Pakan was a Professor of Psychology and of Human Services at Empire State College, State University of New York (1990-1993). Before her tenure at Empire State, Dr. Pakan had her own consulting practice, Quest Consultant, and taught as an Adjunct Professor at Monroe Community College, Rochester, New York, Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, New York and Community College of the Finger Lakes, Canandugua, New York (1983-1990). She has also worked in a variety of clinical settings and served for seven years as a Professor of Medical Surgical Nursing and Psychiatric Nursing at Uniontown School of Nursing, Uniontown, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Pakan has been a contributing editor to a column on Training the Adult Learner for a national publication.
She has served as a consultant and seminar presenter to the Printing Industries of America; Medical Diagnostics of Toronto; Rochester Institute of Technology; International Business Forms Institute; Highland Hospital of Rochester, New York; Rochester City Schools; Valparaiso University Guild; and has presented programs in numerous clinical settings.
Dr. Pakan has three sons, one daughter, four grandsons and two granddaughters. Her hobbies include reading, gardening, and traveling.
